The recently-appointed acting director general of Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat (VDS), James Maina, brings a wealth of experience in public service to the role. With 29 years of experience, Maina has a deep understanding of macroeconomic and national development planning, international relations, monitoring and evaluation, and performance management.
Maina’s appointment is significant not only for Kenya but also for the broader Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Kenya Vision 2030 framework, which Maina has been instrumental in shaping, serves as a model for other countries in the region looking to develop their own long-term growth strategies. The framework’s emphasis on transformative leadership, business unusual, and sustained focus on results is particularly relevant for MENA countries, where infrastructure development, economic diversification, and human capital development are critical priorities.
In the context of emerging technologies and shifting global economic dynamics, MENA countries face significant challenges in leveraging sovereign capital, venture capital, and regional infrastructure development to drive growth and competitiveness. The appointment of Maina at VDS comes at a time when Kenya is increasingly focusing on harnessing technological innovations, such as the rollout of 5G networks, to boost its economy. As such, Maina’s expertise will be crucial in overseeing country reporting on regional and international frameworks, including the Africa Agenda 2063 First Ten-Year Implementation Plan.
Furthermore, MenMaina’s extensive experience will enable him to play a pivotal role in pro-acting and infrastructure development which is so needed for MENA countries, especially in areas of diplomacy, economic planning and transformation. Additionally, Middle East and North Africa countries are deeply dependent On Kenya for goods, services and capital. So it is a strategic impact for these countries and their regional development.
